The 2026 hurricane outlook is below-normal. The Gulf Coast feedgas footprint isn't.
NOAA's 2026 Atlantic outlook is below-normal. The Gulf Coast LNG footprint is structurally larger than at Hurricane Laura. The asymmetry, explained.
NOAA's May 22 Atlantic hurricane outlook calls 2026 below-normal: 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, 1 to 3 major, with a 55% probability of below-normal activity and 10% of above-normal. The agency cites El Niño development through the season as the suppressing dynamic. The base case is the right base case. The consequence side of the asymmetry is what's worth talking about.
The Gulf Coast LNG feedgas footprint is structurally different from the one that existed in 2017 or 2020. US LNG peak export capacity sits at approximately 18 Bcf/d in mid-2026 per EIA Today in Energy, concentrated in a coastal arc from Corpus Christi and Freeport on the Texas side, through Sabine Pass, Cameron, and Calcasieu Pass on the Louisiana side, out to Plaquemines on the Mississippi River. The Sabine-Calcasieu corridor alone carries combined capacity of approximately 7 Bcf/d across three operating terminals. A single Cat 3 landfall in any of these reaches puts a materially larger feedgas volume at risk than the 2017 or 2020 footprint exposed.
Hurricane Laura sets the comparison. Cameron LNG was offline for approximately six weeks after Laura's Cat 4 landfall near Cameron Parish in August 2020, with the first post-storm cargo shipping October 5. Sabine Pass returned to service within about a week, with feedgas deliveries resuming September 2. Those outages happened against a US export capacity base of roughly 9 Bcf/d. The current capacity base is approximately 18 Bcf/d, about double the Laura-era base, and projects under construction push peak export capacity above 22 Bcf/d by 2027. A comparable storm track today puts a structurally larger volume at risk even with unchanged meteorology.
The transmission has changed too. In 2020, US LNG was a meaningful but not dominant share of the European import balance. IEEFA projects US LNG will supply around two-thirds of European LNG imports in 2026, with the US projected to overtake Norway as Europe's largest gas supplier this year. A multi-week force majeure on a Gulf terminal now registers in cargo supply and European balance expectations more immediately than the same event would have in 2020. The price-transmission channel is more direct.
None of this argues against the forecast. The asymmetry is that the modal case is uneventful and the tail case is structurally larger than at equivalent storm intensities in prior seasons. The forecast tells you the probability distribution of the storms. It does not tell you the consequence distribution of the system the storms hit.
The base case is a quiet season. The tail just got fatter.
